Workload Reduction Project

Background

The Department’s school workload toolkit has been a successful support for schools since it was published in the spring of 2018.  It was republished in October 2019 with changes in its format to reflect feedback from school leaders that it had been difficult to navigate and access the wealth of material included.  The relaunch was well received and the toolkit has continued to be used to support the process of changes to improve teacher workload and wellbeing.  It formed the basis of a successful school-based research project in 2019-2020 in conjunction with the Teaching School Council.   Its strength lies in the fact that we have worked closely with school leaders, teachers and their representative organisations (as well as with governors) who have generously shared their work and helpful products they have created.  The toolkit features tools, materials and resources which other schools can learn from, pick up and use, after adapting them to their own contexts.
